MAY IS BETTER SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND HEARING MONTH
Hamilton area Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists and Communicative Disorders Assistants, participated in the 2nd Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (OSLA) Bowling Challenge on May 8 at the Sherwood Centre. This was an opportunity for the professionals from Hamilton agencies who provide services to individuals of all ages to come together and celebrate May Month.
At this year's event, funds were raised for The Equestrian Association for the Disabled (T.E.A.D.) to assist in the purchase of an amplification system for the barn in the Hamilton program. T.E.A.D. is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through a unique form or proven therapy with the use of horses.
May is Better Speech, Language and Hearing Month. This month is used to increase public sensitivity to the challenges experienced by 1 in 6 adults and up to 20% of children with disorders that affect their ability to communicate and swallow. Most of us take these abilities for granted. Early identification and rehabilitation of these disorders can improve and often prevent difficulties in school, on the job and in social situations.
